TV Series Review

Say hello to Cody, Scatter, Mr. Primm and Heart. They’re the Helpsters—that is, monsters who help!

And boy, do they love to help. Whether they’re aiding an adventurer as she prepares to climb a mountain or assisting a dancer with his choreography, the Helpsters are willing to help anyone with any problem, all while singing songs and teaching youngsters how to help those around them.

Helpsters is meant to be a bit silly. It’s aimed at kiddos, after all. But it’s also intended to help develop critical thinking skills in its viewers. It uses the flaws in its characters (such as Scatter’s scatter-brained inclinations and Heart’s tendency to take instructions too literally) in order to teach kids how solve problems by creating a plan of action, finding the correct sequence of events and approaching each new conundrum from a creative mindset.

It’s plausible that your own little monsters might be frightened by the ones in Helpsters, but these Jim Henson-esque puppets are friendly, colorful and polite. And it’s far more likely your children will be “all high fives and handshakes” after watching an episode of this Apple TV+ original series.

Nov. 1, 2019: “Amazing Alie/Robbie & Rhonda Runner”

The Helpsters help an adventure-seeker prepare to climb a mountain and help two runners figure out who is faster.

A monster modeling a mountain-climbing outfit runs away when she doesn’t want to give the outfit back to its owner. Scatter throws food into the air and shouts in frustration. A pair of siblings demonstrates “positive arguing” with each arguing that the other is a faster runner. Mr. Primm’s limbs stretch and bend in abnormal ways.
